David Heck has been teaching at Canyon High School since 2010. A true lover of language, he received his B.A. from UC Irvine in Japanese Language in Literature and went on to teach English abroad in South Korea where he also studied Korean.

Receiving his M.A. in Education and teaching credential in English from Pepperdine, he student-taught in Irvine and at Canyon HS. He spent time as a long-term substitute in Santa Ana before being hired full-time with the English department at Canyon.

Mr. Heck currently teaches mostly 11th grade AP English Language and Composition classes along with a freshman English class. In an annual tradition, he prepares his juniors to engage in parliamentary debates in the library, a unique event in which students debate a wide range of self-selected hot-button issues.

Since his first year at the school, Mr. Heck has been the adviser of the Mock Trial team. He strives to put together the top talent that Canyon has to offer, and the school has regularly made the playoffs. In 2015, the team advanced to the semi-finals. He also advises Mock Trial’s journalist competition participants, helping Canyon students win 1st place in Orange County three years in a row.

Mr. Heck says his favorite part of his job at Canyon High School is definitely the rapport he has with his students. In his spare time, you can find him playing with his two young daughters or playing tennis.

In 2016, Mr. Heck was nominated by Principal Abercrombie for OC Parenting Magazine’s “Top Teachers of Orange County,” offering this testament:

“Mr. Heck is everything you would want in a teacher for your child. As an AP English teacher, Mr. Heck’s class is one that truly promotes higher level learning that will prepare students for college and career paths. When you walk into Mr. Heck’s room, you feel as if you are in an upper-level college class with students collaborating and demonstrating higher-level thinking. Mr. Heck has teaching style and personality promote an atmosphere in which students are consistently challenged to achieve at the highest level without feeling overwhelmed. Students enjoy going to his classroom and constantly sing his praise. Mr. Heck is also the Mock Trial advisor. Under Mr. Heck’s leadership, the Canyon High School Mock Trial team has received numerous accolades, including finishing third in the state competition last year. Mr. Heck contributes countless extra hours of his own time to help prepare and support the students on his Mock Trial team. In addition to teaching and advising the Mock Trial team, Mr. Heck is often the first staff member to volunteer to help other programs that support our students. From attending sporting events to helping judge Academic Decathlon competitions, Mr. Heck is truly in this profession to help provide opportunities for our students. Mr. Heck has the highest level of respect from his peers and is a true role model on the Canyon campus. It is without hesitation that I would recommend Mr. David Heck to represent Canyon High School as our outstanding teacher.”

The same year, he won the Parent-Teacher Association’s (PTA) “Outstanding Teacher” award.
